After serving in both the Air Force and the Army National Guard, Jim Madison retired as an E5, but his commitment to service didn’t come without sacrifice. As a firefighter in the military and a volunteer off base, Jim endured multiple life-threatening incidents. Roofs and walls collapsed on him, he fell through a floor, was electrocuted, hit by a car, and struck by shrapnel. Over time, the injuries compounded until, as he puts it, “my body finally said enough.”

In the last few years alone, Jim has faced a neck fusion, a lumbar spine and pelvis fusion, and even open-heart surgery. Despite these physical setbacks, his mindset has remained strong. He explains that it has always been his goal not to let what’s happened rule his life, but instead to live it the way he chooses, no matter what his body tells him.

That determination fuels his passion as a competitive parathlete. Jim races hand cycles, participates in adaptive hiking programs, and continually pushes himself to stay active. For him, physical movement is more than exercise, it’s therapy. As he shares, “Hand cycling is the best treatment I’ve ever had for my PTSD.” On difficult days, getting on the trail and pushing hard provides both physical release and mental clarity.

Before receiving his adaptive truck through Freedom Mobility, participating in those activities came with constant obstacles. Transporting his seven-foot hand cycle and wheelchair meant disassembling equipment for hours at a time. Simply getting in and out of a vehicle was dangerous and painful. “I was always falling trying to transfer. I had bumps, bruises, cuts and I tore up seats. It was frustrating”, he recalls.

The transfer seat has been one of the most life-changing features. It pivots outward and lowers, allowing Jim to slide safely from his wheelchair into the driver’s seat. That added safety and reliability have significantly reduced his stress and physical strain. The truck has also eliminated the exhausting process of taking apart and reassembling his hand cycle. Now, he can load both his wheelchair and hand cycle together without breaking them down which saves nearly three hours each trip.

One moment stands out clearly. For the first time, Jim drove to the Houston Marathon instead of flying. His hand cycle remained fully assembled in the truck bed. His wheelchair fit beside it. His wife rode up front, and his service dog rested comfortably in the back seat. He remembers having an “aha” moment, realizing he had never been able to travel like that before.

That independence has translated directly into growth, both physically and mentally. With easier access to training, Jim has progressed from competing locally in the San Antonio area to racing nationally. He has taken second place in Houston and Chicago and has competed in marathons across the country, including an international course from the U.S. into Canada. He is preparing to race the Boston Marathon for the third time.

Beyond competition, the truck has strengthened his family life. He can now travel comfortably with his wife, daughter, and service dog which is something that once required complicated logistics. As Jim puts it “The biggest change is the ability to do more with less. I just need the truck. No trailers. No extra equipment. I can do a whole lot more with one vehicle, and it’s a whole lot easier.”

When asked what Freedom Mobility means to him, his gratitude is clear. “Words can’t express how grateful I am. This has been a huge impact on my life. It has made my life so much better. It’s helped my wife. It’s helped my daughter. I’m able to do things I wouldn’t ordinarily be able to do.” he says. Without this support, his adaptive hiking chair might still be sitting unused in the garage. As Jim put it, “My track chair would be sitting there collecting dust if I didn’t have this truck.” Instead, he’s racing, training, traveling, and continuing to live fully.

“It’s given me freedom,” Jim says simply.

Because of Freedom Mobility, Jim isn’t defined by his injuries; he’s defined by where he’s going next.
