At the 2017 Airpower Foundation Skyball event, several physically disabled veterans were gifted motorized wheelchairs, empowering them to climb stairs and sit at eye level with a standing person. Weighing 350 lbs., however, these chairs were nearly impossible to lift and transport, and one attendee, Carter Malouf, took notice.
The next year, Malouf invited John Winsauer, an inventor and the founder of ANT Lifts, to introduce his product at Skyball. Originally invented to lift heavy drill bits in the Texas oil fields, this lightweight hydraulic system turned out to be the perfect solution for transporting oversized chairs.
In 2018, Winsauer was introduced to Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Kevin Pottinger, an Air Force veteran, former Vice Chairman of the Airpower Foundation, and Commissioner and Chairman of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission. Together, Winsauer and Pottinger sought a network of supporters to provide funding for mobility packages for our active military service members, veterans, and first responders—and the Freedom Mobility Foundation came to be.
