Jed Morgan was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, he served in Sangin, Afghanistan with 1st Battalion, 7th Marines which was a deployment that would change his life forever. During a routine foot patrol, Jed triggered an IED, an explosion that resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee and injuries to his right arm. It was a moment that altered the direction of his life, but not the determination at the core of who he is.
For someone who has always felt connected to the outdoors, the injury didn’t just affect Jed physically, it separated him from the places that once brought him peace and purpose. Hunting, exploring the woods with his kids, completing projects on his property, or even accessing certain areas of land became complicated and often required help he wished he didn’t have to ask for. The desire to stay active remained, but the means to do it independently were limited.
Everything changed when he received his adaptive Can-Am with the ANT lift. It wasn’t just another piece of equipment, it was a doorway back into the parts of life he missed. The Can-Am allowed him to travel across rough terrain, haul gear and supplies, and reach areas that had been inaccessible previously. Suddenly, tasks that once required multiple hands were things he could do on his own again. “It’s enabled me to get out and do the things I enjoy,” he shared, and that included taking his kids into the woods, working his land, and exploring trails that reignited his sense of freedom.
One moment from this past fall stands out vividly. Jed was on the last day of a hunting trip, out alone, not expecting much. Instead, he spotted a buck, a chance too perfect to ignore. He made the shot and, using the ANT lift, was able to process the deer and load it completely by himself. It wasn’t just the success of the hunt that mattered, it was the independence behind it. After years of relying on others for tasks like this, that moment represented something deeply personal. “being able to do something I didn’t think was possible anymore," he recalls.
The Can-Am soon became part of his daily rhythm. He uses it to haul tools and heavy materials, handle projects around his property, and reach places he once avoided. Some weeks he uses it every day. When he goes camping or exploring with his kids, he’s not watching from a distance, he’s right there beside them, participating fully. Physically, it helps him get moving, hike, and work with his hands. Mentally, it brings back confidence, motivation, and a sense of capability that had been chipped away over time “It makes me feel capable,” he said. This is a simple phrase that holds a tremendous amount of meaning.
When asked what the equipment has given him, Jed didn’t hesitate. Freedom. The freedom to do the things he loves, even if life looks different now. And when asked to describe the impact in one word, he called it invaluable. For donors or anyone considering supporting Freedom Mobility Foundation, he offers an honest perspective. Unless you’ve lived with physicallimitations, it’s hard to grasp just how life-changing this kind of equipment can be. “This gives us the opportunity to go and do the things we want to do, things we used to do. It opens up possibilities we didn’t think were there anymore.”
From the woods where he harvested a deer on his own, to the mountain trails he can now explore, to the projects he gets to tackle with confidence, the Can-Am didn’t just restore mobility. It returned pieces of life Jed feared he might never fully get back.
