Every day, veterans across the nation confront challenges that stem from service-related injuries and illnesses—challenges that can limit their independence and mobility. The Freedom Mobility Foundation (FMF), with the unwavering support of partners like American Airlines, is dedicated to restoring that independence. By funding and facilitating advanced mobility devices and vehicle adaptations, FMF helps military veterans regain their freedom to move, reconnect with their communities, and reclaim their lives. Since July 2024, FMF has provided life-changing modifications for ten veterans with physical impairments, each story a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of community support.

Josh Meyer: Defying Limits with Advanced Vehicle Adaptations

Branch: U.S. Air Force

Injury: Quadruple Amputee

Vehicle & Modifications: 2021 Dodge RAM 1500 Limited 4x4; ANT Lift, Highly Adapted Cockpit for prosthetics

After a life-altering event over a year ago, Josh Meyer faced unimaginable challenges. Yet, with the help of FMF, his independence has been restored through a custom-modified truck. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: No matter how impossible things seem, there’s always a way forward. You just have to take the next step—even if, in my case, it’s a little more high-tech now,” Josh reflects. With his family and support network by his side, Josh continues to inspire with his humor, determination, and gratitude for the mobility that allows him to engage with life fully.

Karlton Berry: Driving Forward with Adaptive Technology

Branch: U.S. Army

Injury: Paraplegic

Vehicle & Modifications: 2021 Chevrolet Silverado K1500, 4x4; Articulating Driver Seat, Hand Controls, Wheelchair Lift System

Karlton Berry’s journey is marked by resilience and a drive to participate in community life. With modifications to his Silverado, Karlton not only regained his independence but also returned to the activities he loves, such as competing at the 2024 Veterans Day Golf Challenge in a Solo Rider. The presentation of his truck at the NASCAR Brickyard 400 was a highlight, symbolizing both his achievements and the community’s support.

Adam Mayo: Family, Service, and a New Lease on Life

Branch: U.S. Marine Corps

Injury: Paraplegic (chest down, including hands) due to service injury

Vehicle & Modifications: 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe; Hand Controls, Articulating Valet Seat

Sergeant Adam D. Mayo’s commitment to service spanned tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and a life forever changed during a training deployment in Thailand. Despite his injury, Adam’s spirit remains unbroken. Thanks to his adapted Tahoe, donated by generous supporters, Adam can now attend family events, empower his children, and participate in community gatherings like the Veterans Day Golf Challenge, where his resilience and family support shine.

Eric Morante: Overcoming Barriers with Community Collaboration

Branch: U.S. Marine Corps

Injury: Amputee

Vehicle & Modifications: 2021 Chevrolet Silverado K1500; Left Foot Accelerator

Nominated by FMF, Eric Morante received his adapted Silverado through a partnership with USAA and Crash Champions Collision Repair. This collaboration, celebrated at a USAA campus event, underscores the impact of community and corporate partnerships in restoring veterans’ mobility. Eric’s network of support, including friends and fellow veterans, highlights the camaraderie fostered by these life-changing initiatives.

Carla Best: Embracing New Adventures with Adaptive Mobility

For Carla Best, her adapted Subaru from Hiley Subaru has been, in her words, “a GODSEND.” The vehicle has enabled her to ski in the mountains, participate in sled hockey clinics and tournaments, and stay active in wheelchair sports. “So many changes all for the better!” Carla shares, reflecting the profound personal and athletic opportunities made possible by her restored mobility.

Doug Gresenz: Serving Veterans and Exploring New Horizons

Branch: U.S. Marine Corps (Retired)

Vehicle & Modifications: 2021 GMC Denali 4x4; Hand Controls, ANT Lift for 500 lb Action Trackchair

FMF, in partnership with USAA, National Auto Body Council, Crash Champions Collision Repair, and MobilityWorks, funded Doug’s vehicle modifications, allowing him to transport his Action Trackchair and enjoy outdoor activities. Doug, who founded the Redford Ranch Foundation with his wife Carla, uses his new mobility to help other veterans heal through beach outings and fishing. “I went somewhere today I've never been before and it was all made possible by you guys,” Doug expressed after his first adventure with the new equipment.

Matt Spang: From Combat Engineer to Adaptive Sports Leader

Branch: U.S. Army

Injury: Bilateral Amputee from IED blast

Vehicle & Modifications: 2023 GMC Denali 4x4; Hand Controls, ANT Lift (installation in progress)

After surviving multiple IED blasts in Afghanistan, Matt Spang faced a long road of recovery and adaptation. Now a devoted husband, father, and advocate for disabled veterans, Matt stays active as a nationally ranked golfer, sled hockey player, and wheelchair basketball athlete. FMF’s support ensures Matt and his family can travel safely, enabling him to balance sports, family life, and his work with fellow veterans. The advanced vehicle modifications, to be installed in June 2025, will further enhance his independence.

Pedro Perez: Courage and Commitment Beyond the Battlefield

Pedro Perez’s journey embodies resilience shaped by combat, cancer, and a continued commitment to service. “The challenges I have faced have not broken me—they have forged me,” Pedro states. He remains focused on fitness, healing through nature, and exploring accessible outdoor spaces with his family. FMF’s modifications will help him fulfill his mission: “To live fully, inspire others through action, and continue proving that no matter what life takes from you, it can never take your will to fight forward.”

Vehicle & Modifications: Toyota Sienna; Ramp Adaptation

Facing the progressive challenges of ALS, Robert Wozencraft received crucial vehicle adaptations to maintain his mobility and access to the world. The ramp-equipped Sienna represents more than transportation—it’s a means for Robert to remain connected with those he loves and continue participating in life’s moments.

Their story highlights that even small adaptations can bring profound changes, returning joy and possibility to daily life.

Conclusion: Grateful for Every Step Forward

Every adaptation, from high-tech vehicle modifications to lightweight wheelchairs, is made possible by the generosity of donors, the expertise of partners, and the dedication of the Freedom Mobility Foundation. Together, we’re not just restoring movement—we’re restoring hope, dignity, and the opportunity for veterans to live life on their own terms. To all who support our mission: thank you for empowering our nation’s heroes to take their next steps, wherever the road may lead.

As always, a special thank you to American Airlines and all our partners for making these transformations possible!
